200px-playonlinelogoI’m sure we all know how Square’s half-assed online portal Playonline turned out. Basically it’s now just a small hassle for the seventeen people that still play Final Fantasy XI to get through to actually play the game. Originally though, it was touted to be an almost God-like platform for everything you could ever want. Online manga, music, an insane hub of Square goodness that sent every Square fan’s cock into the stratosphere when it was originally announced. According to official fanboy documents of the time, it was going to be “SUHWEEEEEEET”.

Then Japan quickly realized it had no idea how to program any sort of online social hub, and made Final Fantasy XII instead.

While Playonline has almost rotted away into nothing these days, it would still be wise to check out the video above for what Playonline was originally going to be. While Square’s fever dream never quite came to fruition, it did at least produce this AWESOME promo video.

Ronnie: man I wish people really said what they were typing.

Jeremy: I know.
